Habitat, Diet, and General Info
The Andean flamingo lives in the wetlands of southern Peru to northwest Argentina and northern Chile. Their diet is mostly diatoms which are at the bottom of the lake.The Andean flamingo usually lives up to 30 years .It stands 1 m-1.4m tall. The average weight is about 4 kilograms.
The Andean flamingo reproduces, has one or more cells, it grows and it needs air, water, food and shelter.
Enemies and Disturbances
Flamingos eggs and chicks are preyed upon by birds such as eagles and vultures and animals such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, foxes, dogs and jackals. Humans have destroyed the flamingo's habitat by mining, building roads and draining the water from their habitat. In some places flamingo eggs are removed from nests and sold. Wild flamingos once lived in the southern parts of Florida in the United States but people killed them for their feathers and the birds died out. Because of people, there are only 38000 left.
Reproduction
They are monomongous for several seasons. Male flamingos display their feathers and plumage in an effort to court females.
Migration
The Andean flamingo has the ability to fly 700 kilometres per day. They can travel at 50-60 km per/hour. They migrate from Lima to Santiago. It is 3700 km from Lima to Santiago. During the summer, when migration, Andean flamingos prefer elevations between 11,483 and 14,764 feet in the puna and altiplano regions of the Andes.
